Out of the Broom Closet - Lizann Bassham CD

Lizanns new CD started with a song written about the full moon rising in Death Valley. That song, The Rising of the Moon, soon needed musical siblings and Out of the Broom Closet began to take shape. Circle Strong evokes the casting of a sacred circle and a blessing on all witches everywhere, in and out of the Broom Closet. The recording features Irisanya and Gwion from North Bay Reclaiming helping to raise the magic. Half His Talent is a tribute to Lizanns dad, Donny Bassham, whose own music filled her life from the time she was a baby. The lovely harmonies of Paula Matzinger and rockabilly riffs on the electric guitar from Dave Peterson make this truly a toe tapping tune. Child Not My Own celebrates the amazing Gen X and Millennial people in Lizanns life. That Childs a Witch gives Lizann the chance to play her Dads 1958 Rickenbacker for the first time and pay a little homage to the girl groups of the late 50s and early 60s. The electric tag at the end is a brief cameo by her Dad. Voices was the title song for a readers theater show Lizann wrote about homelessness which debuted in Berkeley in the Spring of 2010. The recording features Gaiatree Jones and Sharon Sadler adding their angel choir harmonies. Breastify! is the title song from the play written by Lizann by the same name. This is a live recording of the original cast from August 2010. Check out Breastify! show clips on YouTube, they range from the poignant (Even Men, Poster Child, The Land of Milk and Honey) to the ridiculous (Us Girls). Wish Id Been Old Enough To Ask expresses Lizanns sadness that she really didnt have the chance to find out more about her Grandfathers life. Sharon Sadler and Gaiatree Jones add their sweet voices to the lament. Our Mom is Lizann and her brother, Andrew Brennans, first musical collaboration about, you guessed it their Mom. It wont be their last. The song explores how, because they were nine years apart, they had both shared experiences and different experience of the strong and gifted woman who gave them life. it is What It Is is a chant that reflects on just that. Oxymoronic, Isnt It? came about through a series of Facebook conversations Lizann had with an old high school friend. Im a libertarian socialist, Christian Witch, in a traditional alternative life, she sings, oxymoronic, it certainly is. The Rising of the Moon was Lizanns response to her joyful and haunting awe of the desert. Nico DeCamp brings that feeling to life with the addition of his own haunting and joyful violin. Waltz Till We Die celebrates maidens, mothers, and crones, the Celtic triple Goddess, and our wonderful dance of life. Paula Matzinger shares her beautiful harmonies, Dave Peterson sweetens the dance with his guitar notes, and Nico DeCamps violin makes you want to swirl around the room yourself. Open the Circle ends what was begun with Circle Strong and with gratitude to the East, and South, and West, and North, Irisanya and Gwion help Lizann open the sacred circle with joy and thanksgiving. Blessed Be!
